SAN BERNARDINO CA. SHERIFF’s OFFICE SPENT $600,000 ON TONER & INK
As part of a plan to streamline operations and become less dependent on paper, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has begun integrating a new paperless system that could potentially save the department millions of dollars and help officials investigate crimes more efficiently.“Right now it’s kind of difficult to pinpoint numbers, since the office supply budget isn’t broken down by individual items,” Ted Byerly, systems development team leader for the department, said from the Hesperia station where he was training deputies and staff on the new Presynct system. “What we do know is that the department spends $600,000 over three years on ink and toner alone. If you factor in paper, that will be a substantial amount saved.”

The new program will make report filing virtually paperless.
Under the current system, deputies would file a report, then print out a paper copy to be checked and approved by a sergeant. It would next go to a clerk who would take the report and scan it as an image so it can be filed.“With Presynct, the deputy can file a report on the system, the supervisor can approve it and it can electronically be sent to a clerk for electronic filing,” Byerly said. “Ideally, there shouldn’t be any need to print out a paper product, saving a lot of time and money.”

Officials are also working on making filings with the District Attorney’s office electronic.“Right now when we take a case to the D.A. we have to make three copies of the report,” Byerly said. “Once we can figure out how this can be done, we hope to be able to cut down a lot on that paper.”
