Taiwan Gov. Puts Order Freeze on Consumables
Such as Paper, Copy Machines, and Printer Toner.

In response to ongoing government budget cuts and freezes that could impact day-to-day operations, Taiwan’s Presidential Office has announced a series of energy-saving initiatives, which will take effect starting Monday. Along with suspending holiday activities, the office aims to reduce costs while maintaining essential functions.

Presidential Office spokesperson Karen Kuo (้ƒญ้›…ๆ…ง) revealed that 10% of the water and electricity budget, along with 70% of the operational budget, will be frozen. To minimize energy consumption, the office plans to reduce landscape lighting, which won a 2020 “Taiwan Light Environment Award” after being updated in 2019. The lighting will now be dimmed after sunset and turned off entirely by midnight. Additionally, corridor lighting will be reduced by 25%, and air conditioning usage and hours will be cut. Watering of gardens and car washing will also be limited.

Kuo further explained that, aside from those absolutely necessary for official duties, subscriptions to newspapers and magazines, cable TV services, and the use of office supplies such as paper, copy machines, and printer toner will be reduced.

While the Presidential Office has long been committed to energy and resource conservation, Kuo emphasized that with no clear end date for the budget freeze, the office will continue to operate efficiently through cost-saving measures, resource sharing, and self-management.
